Improve your quality of life

You are not alone if your life is affected by excessive sweating. The good news is that effective treatments are available which could significantly improve your quality of life!

Everybody sweats, it’s a normal part of how our bodies regulate temperature. However, people with hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. When severe sweating gets in the way of certain daily activities and antiperspirants are not working, you may be the ideal candidate for Botulinum toxin treatments. The common treated areas are under arms, palms, feet and foreheads that have over active sweat glands.

Botulinum toxin (which is also commonly known as Botox) is approved by the FDA to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when medicines used on the skin (topical) do not work well enough. Botulinum toxin is injected into the affected areas to help control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands do not receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops.

Our specialist Doctors are fully registered with the General Medical Council and are highly experienced at treating patients who suffer from excessive sweating.

What is Botox?

Botox (Botulinum toxin) is a protein produced by Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It relaxes muscles by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces the muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles.

The cosmetic effect of Botox was first documented as early as 1989 and was approved by the FDA in 2002. It is now regularly used by many, both male and female, as it is less intrusive and less artificial in appearance than a traditional form of treatment such as plastic surgery.

How does hyperhidrosis affect me?

People with this condition can produce a large volume of sweat. This means that the affected areas may be constantly damp. This may make normal everyday activities more difficult to carry out and it can cause embarrassment at work or socially. However, it’s not true that excessive sweating causes body odour: the aroma that some people think is due to sweating is in fact caused by bacteria if sweat remains where it is for an extended period of time.

What Factors can stimulate excessive sweating?

  • Exercise
  • Heat or cold
  • Alcohol, tea or coffee
  • Smoking
  • Hot or spicy food
  • Stress, anxiety or strong emotions
  • Certain times of the day

What is the treatment process?

Before the treatment: A thorough consultation is carried out by our specialist Doctor to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you. Our Doctor will examine your medical history and the area requiring treatment to determine the injection sites. A treatment goal will be discussed and finally a customised treatment plan will be tailored to your needs.

The treatment: For your own comfort the Doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anaesthetic cream. The actual procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes and is relatively straightforward. Any make-up will be removed and the skin disinfected. Our specialist doctor will then study your affected area as individuals can differ. A series of small Botulinum toxin injections are performed on the affected treatment areas through a very fine needle.

After the treatment: No downtime is needed – you are ready to get on with your day! Specific after care instruction will be provided with your consultation and treatment. Patients must not rub or massage the treated area for 4 hours after the injection in order to prevent the spreading of the medication. It is recommended not to exercise for 24 hours after the procedure.

When will I see the results and how long will they last?

You will start seeing results from about 1-2 weeks after having the treatment. The results last up to 6-7 months. Your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment. It is recommended to have the treatment every 6 months to achieve the best possible results with the treatment. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you.

Where does the sweat go?

Your sweat doesn’t go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the treated areas. Remember, the rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally.

What if I decide to stop having the treatment?

If you decide not to have further treatment, your sweating will gradually return to its pre-treated state. The effects of the treatment will gradually wear off, and your underarm/ treated area will resume as normal.

Who is an appropriate candidate to have this procedure?

When antiperspirants cannot control symptoms of your severe sweating, Botulinum toxin injections may be able to help. Our team of experts can help you decide if this treatment is right for you. In order to make the right treatment decision, you should tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and allergies to any Botulinum toxin products.

How much does the treatment cost?

The treatment costs are as follows:

£499 for the underarm area | £550 for facial sweating | £550 for hands | £550 for feet

*Please note: Patients wanting to treat the underarm area will be required to attend the appointment with clean, shaved armpits. The hair must not be longer than 1mm to prevent any risk of infection during the injection session.
