Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Ellipse I2PL system treat Vascular Lesions/Thread Veins?

The light is attracted to the target chromophore oxy-haemoglobin in the blood. As the light is absorbed by the blood in the vessels, a heat reaction is caused which coagulates the blood and destroys protein in the wall of the vessel. The vessel then breaks down and the debris is removed by the body’s natural waste disposal system.

This heat destroys the protein in the wall of the thread vein. The vessel then breaks down and the debris is removed by the body’s natural waste disposal system. As a result the veins will gradually, and safely, disappear after treatment.

Which thread veins can be treated?

Thread Veins on most parts of the body can be treated. The most common treatments are for superficial veins on the face, neck and chest areas. As the treatment relies on absorption of light by the haemoglobin in the blood, the most effective results are seen with light skin. The lighter the skin, the more pronounced the contrast between the vessel and the skin, making treatment easier. However, Ellipse has pre-programmed settings for different skin colours that deliver the correct energy output for your complexion.

Which type of client can be treated?

We can only treat clients of skin types 1-3. It is important that the client avoids sun exposure 30-60 days prior to treatment. Sun exposure can increase the risk of pain or burns from excessive light absorption in the epidermis. If the client has a sun tan it may be better to wait until the colour reduces to achieve the best results. The Ellipse has pre programmed treatment suggestions for different skin types

Does IPL treatment hurt?

The sensation will vary from area to area and from client to client. The sensation that is felt depends upon the amount and size of vessels in the area. It can be described as a hot, sharp sensation and would be considered the strongest discomfort of all the Ellipse treatments. Some clients liken it to mild sunburn after the treatment.

What post treatment reactions can be seen after treatment for Facial Thread Veins?

As you shoot the vein it should flash or pulse blue within one second. If there is no colour change the energy may need to be increased or the vessel size setting may need to be adjusted. Slight erythema is seen immediately after the treatment and this will disappear in 1-2 hours or in some cases a few days. A blurring of the vessel is often apparent after treatment, normally followed by a variable degree of oedema. The oedema may last up to 4 days and may appear puffy, particularly around the eyes. These are all signs of inflammation and are an indication of successful treatment.

How long does an Ellipse IPL treatment take?

The glass prism within the Ellipse applicator that guides the light to the skin is 10mm by 48mm, so several vessels can be targeted in one flash of light. The treatment time depends on the area to be covered and the number of distinct vessels to be treated. A single session typically lasts 10-20 minutes.

How many treatments are necessary to remove Facial Thread Veins?

On average 2-4 treatments with 4 week intervals are needed for the best results. Top up treatments may be needed in the future to maintain these results.

Do I need to take special precautions before treatment?

The light used is completely safe, visible light. Potentially harmful wavelengths are removed by the unique Ellipse Dual Mode Filtering system. Since tanning takes place by accumulation of pigment (melanin) in the skin, it is, however, important to avoid tanning (sun, solarium or self-tanning cream) before and during the treatment period. Otherwise your tanned skin will absorb more light, which makes treatment less effective.

If larger veins on the leg have already been treated (surgery or sclerotherapy), Ellipse treatment should be delayed for at least one month to allow the healing process to be complete first.

What post treatment precautions may be needed?

Generally, no post-treatment care is needed. But people with sensitive skin may benefit from using a soothing cream for a few days after treatment. We recommend you limit sun exposure and use a sunscreen (SPF 60) for a few weeks following treatment. After treatment of thread veins on the legs, compression (surgical) stockings should be worn for two weeks.

Aloe Vera will be applied after the treatment but if there is excessive erythema a cool compress can also be applied.

How many Ellipse treatments do I need?

The number of treatments depends on the body site and the severity of the thread vein. On average 2-4 treatments with 4 week intervals are needed for the best results. Top up treatments may be needed in the future to maintain these results.

How can I be sure Ellipse is safe and effective?

Clinical trials documenting Ellipse’s safety and effectiveness are carried out by leading doctors prior to the release of the product. The results of these tests are then published in respected, refereed medical journals. You are welcome to view these scientific papers on the Ellipse website at www.ellipse.org. The settings used for your treatment will be based on the settings recommended by the clinicians who carried out the clinical trials.

How does the Ellipse I2PL treatment work?

The Ellipse I2PL treatment works by directing well controlled pulses of light into the upper skin. The light is absorbed by one of the body’s own natural substances – haemoglobin – contained in the red blood cells. Haemoglobin converts the light energy into heat. This heat is transferred to the walls of the blood vessels, which are permanently damaged and removed by the body’s own defence mechanism. The method of converting light to heat and using it to destroy the target without damaging the surrounding tissue is called “Selective Photothermolysis”. The visible light produced by the Ellipse I2PLsystem is carefully controlled to produce the correct pulse length and right amount of energy to destroy the vessel. Best results are obtained on patients who have light to medium skin.
