Smoothing of Lines & Folds around the Mouth and Nose

The Knightsbridge Laser Clinic, London

The Knightsbridge Laser Clinic offers dermal filler and botulinum toxin injections for the lines and folds around the nose and mouth area. All treatments are carried out by our highly experienced team of specialist doctors, Dr Salinda Johnson and Dr Ame Ng in our Knightsbridge clinic.

Reverse the signs of ageing

As we age, our skin loses fat, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which offer facial volume and support. The bony structure and the muscles also lose volume. With dermal fillers that resemble your body’s own hyaluronic acid your facial volume and the quality and integrity of your skin can be replaced and with botulinum toxin our doctor can soften facial expressions and reverse the signs of ageing.

The aging problems around the mouth area include:

  • Smoker or lipstick bleeding lines & wrinkles around the lips
  • Drooping mouth corners
  • Marionette lines (lines that come down from the mouth corner towards the chin)
  • Nose to mouth line (nasolabial folds)
  • Lines & wrinkles on the lower cheek and chin.

What are causes?

The movement of the muscles of your lips when you talk, smile, smoke or kiss can cause creases on your skin and over a long period of time this may become permanent, leaving you lined and wrinkled even when the underlying muscle is relaxed. This happens because the aging process reduces the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin. The sun can also degrade your skin so much that it loses its ability to snap back in to place. Aging also causes the sagging of your cheeks. Consequently, creating nose to mouth folds, marionette lines and drooping mouth corners.

What treatments are available?

Dermal filler injections: the treatment involves the injection of filler to plump up and fill the lines or folds. This treatment is very effective for static lines and folds around the lips and cheeks, nose to mouth folds, marionette lines and for the corners of the mouth to be lifted.

Botulinum toxin injections: (Commonly known as Botox) can reduce the movement of the muscles around the lips which cause smoking lines and the muscles that excessively pull the corners of the mouth downward. Therefore, it helps improve smoker lines and drooping mouth corners. During your consultation, the specialist doctor will carefully examine and advise you on the best treatment option for you individually.

What is Botox?

Botox (Botulinum toxin) is a protein produced by Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It relaxes muscles by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces the muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles. The cosmetic effect of Botox was first documented as early as 1989 and was approved by the FDA in 2002. It is now regularly used by many, both male and female, as it is less intrusive and less artificial in appearance than a traditional form of treatment such as plastic surgery.

What is dermal filler?

Dermal fillers are materials that are frequently used to create volume, define borders and correct scarring, wrinkles and other depressions in the skin. They are often a kind of soft tissue designed in such a way that enables injections into the skin for purposes of improving the appearance. Generally, they are made of several types of materials of synthetic, man-made and natural categories and they have been developed into various standards depending on the level of usage.

Which type of dermal filler is used?

The most common Dermal Filler used for the lip area is Hyaluronic acid (such as Restylane and Juvederm). Hyaluronic acid is one of nature’s most versatile and fascinating substances. It is found throughout the body as well as in most other living organisms. It has many functions, from giving the skin elasticity and providing our skin with volume, giving it a youthful appearance.

Restylane and Juvederm are sterile gels consisting of non-animal, cross-linked, hyaluronic acid (HA) and are made in a laboratory. They contain no human or animal DNA and have the best safety profile of all the fillers currently on the market as it is the only type of filler that is reversible. These products are FDA approved for use in the nasolabial fold and are used “off-label” in other areas.

What is the treatment process?

Before the treatment: A thorough consultation is carried out by our specialist Doctor to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you. The doctor will examine your desired treatment area and give you various options to ensure the best results. A treatment goal will be discussed and finally a customised treatment plan will be tailored to your needs. The doctor will discuss the treatment in detail with you and answer any questions you may have. Once you have agreed on a treatment plan, the doctor will apply an anaesthetic cream to the area for 20-30 min.

The treatment: Dermal filler is injected in small amounts and in precise locations into your skin so that there is total control over the shape and contours created by the procedure. The doctor will then massage the product to re-shape the treatment area. During the procedure, you are fully awake. You hold a mirror and you are in complete control of the procedure’s results.

After the treatment: You should avoid touching or applying makeup on the treated area for 6 hours in order to prevent infection. There may be slight redness, swelling and some tenderness of the treated areas. This is normal of an injection and will disappear in one or two days. Specific post treatment instruction will be given. The results are immediate and last from 6-12 months. Because the results are relatively temporary, adjustments can be made as your face changes over time and you always retain a natural look.

Will I see the result immediately?

After the injection, the lips often become swollen. This means that the result immediately after the treatment may not be the final result. The swelling typically resolves spontaneously within a couple of days. To achieve the result you want, it is recommended to have a touch-up treatment 2 to 4 weeks after the initial session. This will also add to the duration of the treatment effect.

How long will the result last?

The result generally last between six to 12 months. The longevity of these products is variable and each individual may obtain a different result. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion.

What is the Botulinum toxin injection treatment process?

Before the treatment: A thorough consultation is carried out by our specialist Doctor to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you. The doctor may examine your ability to move certain muscles to determine location, size and use of the muscles that create your wrinkles. A treatment goal will be discussed and finally a customised treatment plan will be tailored to your needs.

The treatment: No anaesthesia is required. However, for your own comfort the doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anaesthetic cream. Any make-up will be removed and the skin disinfected. Our specialist doctor will then study your facial muscles as individuals can differ. A few tiny injections of Botox will be administered directly into the muscles that cause those lines and wrinkles. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes for the entire treatment.

After the treatment: For at least 4 hours: Keep upright/ do not bend excessively. For 12 hours after the treatment: Avoid extreme facial expressions, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, and avoid wearing heavy make-up. For 2 weeks after the treatment: Avoid exposure to strong sunlight and very cold temperatures. Avoid stimulating facials/ facial massage.

Are there any side effects?

Injection related side effects are minimal and temporary such as redness, swelling, bruising etc. Spreading of the Botox to surrounding muscles can easily be prevented by NOT rubbing or touching the treated area(s) for approximately 4 hours post treatment. Any reactions are generally minimal, temporary and typically relate to the injection itself.

How long will the results last?

On average 4-6 months. In order to achieve the best prevention of aging lines, it is recommended to have the treatment regularly every 4 months.

Am I suitable to have the treatment?

Only you together with the Doctor can decide if the treatment is suitable for you. During your consultation, our expert Botox Doctor will assess your medical history and make sure that you are suitable for the treatment. Be sure to inform the doctor about any pre-existing medical condition such as:

  • A disease that affects your muscles and nerves such as Myasthenia Gravis or Lambert-Eaton Syndrome
  • Allergies to any Botulinum toxin products
  • Medication that you are taking
  • If you’ve had facial surgery or plan to have surgery
  • Pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breast feeding

What will happen if I stop having Botulinum toxin injections?

The relaxant effect of the Botox will wear off over time and you can effectively continue or discontinue at any time. This being said regular treatment will prevent those deeper, more permanent lines that appear with age. As they say, “prevention is better than cure”.

The longevity of these products is variable and each individual may obtain a different result. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion.

How much does it cost?

Botulinum toxin injections: Small areas such as smoking lines around mouth or drooping mouth corner treatments are £99

Dermal filler: The costs depends on the amount of product used. The treatment cost starts from £250.
