Jaw Reduction (Using Botulinum Toxin Injections)

For aesthetic (prominent square jaw) or medical reasons (e.g. Bruxism- grinding of teeth), The Knightsbridge Laser Clinic can soften and contour your Jaw line without the need of surgery!

jaw-reductionExcessively wide jaws create the square shape of the face and are a common problem for most patients. While the square jaw may be desirable in men, it is not easily accepted or desired for a feminine appearance.

If you place your hands at the angle of your jaws as you clench your teeth down, you will feel the bulging and hardness of a muscle. This muscle, called the masseter muscle, is often a primary cause of the widened jaw and the teeth grinding. Botulinum toxin injections weaken the muscle, hence improve teeth grinding. The injection can also significantly reduce the size of this muscle and make the lower part of the face narrower. A side benefit is the cheeks are highlighted.

What is Botox?

Botox (Botulinum toxin) is a purified protein produced by Bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It relaxes muscles by temporarily blocking nerve impulses to the injected muscles. This reduces the muscle activity that causes lines and wrinkles.

The cosmetic effect of Botulnum toxin was first documented as early as 1989 and was approved by the FDA in 2002. It is now regularly used by many, both male and female, as it is less intrusive and less artificial in appearance than a traditional form of treatment such as plastic surgery.

How does Botulinum toxin reduce the size of my jaw?

Botulinum toxin weakens the injected muscle over time, which leads to a reduction in the overall size. Our specialist Doctor will focus the treatment precisely where the three heads of the muscle overlap (for maximum effects), which happens to correspond with where the muscle inserts into the bone. By reducing the muscle at the point of attachment to the bone, the bone can also reduce over time giving longer-lasting results without compromising the strength of the bone(s).

The aesthetic effect of reducing the flared nature of the jaw line is only truly appreciated in the right candidate. Our Doctor will personally evaluate your face before deciding if you are suitable to have this treatment.

Who is an appropriate candidate to have this procedure done?

The most important criterion to decide if you are a good candidate is the thickness of your masseter muscle (jaw muscle). The relative thickness of the masseter can easily be determined by biting down hard and feeling the outer jaw line. If the muscle appears to be almost rock hard and enlarged in appearance when you clench your teeth, you may be a good candidate to have this procedure done.

When will I see the results and how long will they last?

Generally, it takes about 6 weeks before you see the desired results. They will last between 6 months to a year however, at the end of the first week you may notice that your jawline feels a lot softer when you bite down and feel it.

It is recommended to evaluate the result at 3 months following the first injection in order to evaluate the full effects and see if you need further treatments.

You may need up to 3 treatments in total to achieve maximum result depending on your jaw muscle size. Top up treatments are usually required every 6-12 months to maintain the best results. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion.

What is the treatment process?

Before the treatment: A thorough consultation is carried out by our specialist doctor to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you. Our doctor will examine the jaw muscle to determine the injection sites. A treatment goal will be discussed and finally a customised treatment plan will be tailored to your needs.

The treatment: No anaesthesia is required. However, for your own comfort the doctor may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anaesthetic cream. Any make-up will be removed and the skin disinfected. Our specialist doctor will then study your facial muscles as individuals can differ. A few tiny injections of Botulinum toxin will be administered directly into the masseter muscles. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes for the entire treatment.

After the treatment: For at least 4 hours: Keep upright/ do not bend excessively. For 12 hours after the treatment: Avoid extreme facial expressions, avoid excessive alcohol consumption, and avoid wearing heavy make-up. For 2 weeks after the treatment: Avoid exposure to strong sunlight and very cold temperatures. Avoid stimulating facials/ facial massage.

What is the recovery like?

There really is no recovery period or significant swelling or bruising. The treatment takes only five minutes as an office procedure and you may drive home thereafter. There really are no restrictions in your activity following the procedure.

Will I have problems chewing my food?

Most patients do not have this problem. However, you may experience some tiring after chewing for a while. This phenomenon is only temporary and will go away over time.

Does the procedure hurt?

The procedure is painless. The specialist doctor has a specialized method of injecting that virtually eliminates all discomfort without the need for an anaesthetic.

When I will get the result for excessive teeth grinding (Bruxism)?

The result for teeth grinding can be experience within 1-2 weeks. Regular treatments every 4-6 month will generally provide longer lasting and more effective results as the muscles will become smaller and less active.

How much does the treatment cost?

The cost of the treatment is dependent on the size of the jaw muscle as well as the amount of product required to achieve the desired result.

Jaw reduction (both sides) £450 | Jaw reduction (one side) £225
