Non-Surgical Jawline Treatment & Jowl RemovalThe Knightsbridge Laser Clinic, London
The Knightsbridge Laser Clinic, Knightsbridge, offers dermal fillers for the prevention of sagging jawlines or jowls. All treatments are carried out by our team of highly experienced doctors, Dr Salinda Johnson and Dr Ame Ng.
Correcting the jawline
As we age, our skin loses fat, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, which offer facial volume and support. The bony structure and the muscles also lose volume. With dermal fillers that resemble your body’s own hyaluronic acid your facial volume and the quality and integrity of your skin can be replaced. Some patients experience two little indentations that occur on the jaw line directly below the outside corners of their mouth as their lower cheek’s skin sags downward. These indentations, or notches, interrupt the smoothness of the jaw line and can give it a shape that looks a little bit like an “S” shape. Medically this is called prejowl sulcus. Fortunately, if the sagging is mild to moderate, non surgical treatment such as dermal filler injections can correct this problem easily.
What is dermal filler?
Dermal fillers are materials that are frequently used to create volume, define borders and correct scarring, wrinkles and other depressions in the skin. They are often a kind of soft tissue designed in such a way that enables injections into the skin for purposes of improving the appearance. Generally, they are made of several types of materials of synthetic, man-made and natural categories and they have been developed into various standards depending on the level of usage.
Which type of dermal filler used to the treatment?
The most common dermal filler used is a temporary filler called Hyaluronic acid (such as Restylane and Juvederm). Hyaluronic acid is one of nature’s most versatile and fascinating substances. It is found throughout the body as well as in most other living organisms. It has many functions, from giving the skin elasticity and providing our skin with volume, giving it a youthful appearance.
Restylane and Juvederm are sterile gels consisting of non-animal, cross-linked, hyaluronic acid (HA) and are made in a laboratory. They contain no human or animal DNA and have the best safety profile of all the fillers currently on the market as it is the only type of filler that is reversible. These products are FDA approved for use in the nasolabial fold and are used “off-label” in other areas.
What is the treatment process?
Before the treatment: A thorough consultation is carried out by our specialist Doctor to determine whether the treatment is suitable for you. The doctor will examine your desired treatment area and give you various options to ensure the best results. A treatment goal will be discussed and finally a customised treatment plan will be tailored to your needs. The doctor will discuss the treatment in detail with you and answer any questions you may have. Once you have agreed on a treatment plan, the doctor will apply an anaesthetic cream to the area for 20-30 min.
The treatment: Dermal filler is injected in small amounts and in precise locations into your skin so that there is total control over the shape and contours created by the procedure. The doctor will then massage the product to re-shape the Jawline or Jowls. During the procedure, you are fully awake. You hold a mirror and you are in complete control of the procedure’s results.
After the treatment: You should avoid touching or applying makeup on the treated area for 6 hours in order to prevent infection. There may be slight redness, swelling and some tenderness of the treated areas. This is normal of an injection and will disappear in one or two days. Specific post treatment instruction will be given. The results are immediate and last from 6-12 months. Because the results are relatively temporary, adjustments can be made as your face changes over time and you always retain a natural look.
What is the recovery period?
Due to the effects of the injection it is be better to rest until the next day and you are advised to take some pain killers to prevent any discomfort for 1-2 days.
What are the risks?
The soft tissue fillers that demonstrate consistent safety for the last 20 years are the non-permanent fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm. As with any sort of injection there can be some bruising and minor swelling although this is not severe and usually settles within 2-3 days. There is rare chance of any allergic reaction which means no skin test is needed before treatment.
How can I avoid bruising?
To avoid swelling and bruising, you should do the following: – Avoid aspirin, Excedrin, ibuprofen, Aleve or Advil for 1 week before and 2 days after. Tylenol is always fine. – Avoid Vitamin E (multivitamin ok) or St. John’s Wort for 2-3 days before or after. – Avoid exercise except for walking for 24 hours after the procedure.
How long do the results last?
The results last 9-12 months. The longevity of these products are variable and each individual may obtain a different result. A plan for regular follow-up treatments to maintain the initial result can be created for you. Our treatment provides a long-lasting but not permanent result leaving you the option of refining your treatment in tune with changing taste and fashion.
How much does it cost?
Prices start from £250.
